Pleasure has been made to seem either frivolous or automatic. We are interested in a more exacting possibility: that enjoyment can be cultivated with the same seriousness as judgment.

The well-made room, the sentence that asks to be read twice, and the object whose balance is understood only in the hand all depend upon attention.

A considered life is not a smaller life. It is one in which fewer things become invisible.
